Carville Climbing Site
Carville, the latest climbing site in Lower Normandy …
We are here with Clécy’s little sister. The Carville cliff, some 40 meters high, offers fun climbing for beginners and experienced climbers. The site equipment is recent since it was completed a little over 10 years ago by the French Alpine Club Vallée de la Vire, located in Saint-Lô about 30 kilometers from Carville. Throughout the year, the site is regularly visited by climbers from the club but also from throughout the region.
The cliff is located in the town of Carville between Vire and Saint-Lô. To access the cliff, from exit 40 of the A84, take the direction of Vire.
After crossing the village of Campeaux, take the road to the left towards Bény-Bocage which runs along the river « La Vire ». At the end of this road, turn right then 300 meters further again the first right on a small road. The climbing site is 500 meters further along the road. Cars are parked below the cliff, along the road.
This easily accessible natural site has the advantage of listing a few routes of 2 lengths up to 40 meters. Overall, the routes are accessible with 70% of the routes rated 5 and below. The 75 routes currently equipped range from 2 to 7a +. They are fully equipped to COSIROC standards with pins and chains as relays. However, some routes are only accessible by roping.
The names of the channels are mostly written at the bottom of them. Facing south, the cliff can be hot in summer but also dries quickly after the showers thanks to the nature of its rock.
From the top of the tracks, you can admire the path of the ledge in the heart of the Norman bocage made up of green plots …
