Plessis Grimoult Abbey
Plessis Grimoult Abbey
The priory was founded by the bishop of Bayeux Richard de Dover in 1133, where he established a community of canons of the order of Saint Augustine. The canons did not live withdrawn from the world as they served many surrounding parishes.
The abbey church built in the 12th century was ransacked during the Wars of Religion (1562). During the Revolution, the abbey was sold, the church became a stone quarry. The rest was destroyed in 1944 during the capture of Mont Pinçon.
Many vestiges remain today: the south tower of the abbey church, the 14th century Gothic chapter house, the 13th century gatehouse and the foundations of a fortified garden (miniature 13th century fortification).
The old priory has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1928.
